Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier star of the best picture Oscar winner of 2012, was euthanized at age 13 (91 in dog years), his owner confirmed in a Tweet.

"Sad news. Our beloved Uggie has passed away. He will always live on in our hearts and in film, his book, and his app. Miss you buddy," the tweet said.

It ended a painful battle with prostate cancer, according to media reports.

Age had as many lines as the human actors in "The Artist," considering the film was silent and shot in black and white. The movie captured five Academy Awards.

Uggie, whose also acted with Will Ferrell in "The Campaign and with Reese Witherspoon in "Water for Elephants," was award the Palm Dog Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and the 2012 Golden Collar Award. He is the only dog to be honored with paw prints in cement at Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre. His "heartwarming memoir" title "My Story" was published in October 2012.

"He was my favorite red carpet interview ever," said Lead Stories' editor-in-chief Alan Duke, who first met Uggie at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards.
